India’s First Indigenous AI Foundation Model: A Leap Toward Technological Sovereignty

A Vision Rooted in India’s Heart

Imagine an AI that understands the nuances of Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, and 19 other official Indian languages. Sarvam AI: The Architects of India’s AI Future

Sarvam AI, named after the Sanskrit word for “everything,” embodies its mission to create inclusive AI for India’s 1.4 billion people. Founded in 2023, the startup has already made waves with Sarvam-1, a multilingual model fluent in 10 Indian languages, and Sarvam-2B, a 2-billion parameter model trained on 4 trillion tokens. Backed by $41 million from investors like Lightspeed, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures, Sarvam AI was selected from 67 proposals to lead this project. Their expertise, coupled with a collaboration with AI4Bharat at IIT Madras, ensures the new model will be multi-modal (handling text, voice, and more) and multi-scale, with three variants: Sarvam-Large for advanced reasoning, Sarvam-Small for real-time apps, and Sarvam-Edge for on-device tasks.

At its core, this AI model is a technological marvel. With 70 billion parameters, it’s designed to compete with global giants, incorporating innovations in programming and engineering. Sarvam AI will leverage 4,086 H100 GPUs for six months to train the model from scratch, ensuring it’s optimized for India’s needs. The model’s voice-centric design and fluency in Indian languages make it ideal for applications like AI-powered customer service, parliamentary translations, or educational tools for rural students. The IndiaAI Safety Institute is overseeing ethical development, addressing concerns like bias, deepfakes, and privacy to create a trustworthy AI. This infrastructure, supported by companies like Jio Platforms and Yotta, is a testament to India’s self-reliance in AI.

As Minister Vaishnaw noted, “Sarvam’s models will compete with the best in the world.” By building an AI stack from scratch—data, training, and deployment—India is not just catching up but aiming to lead. The government’s plan to develop indigenous GPUs within 3–5 years further underscores this commitment to self-reliance.

Challenges and the Road Ahead

Building a world-class AI model isn’t without challenges. Training on Indian datasets requires navigating linguistic diversity and ensuring cultural accuracy. Ethical concerns, like mitigating biases, demand rigorous oversight. Yet, the India AI Mission’s holistic approach—combining compute power, datasets, and safety frameworks—positions India to overcome these hurdles. By late 2025, Sarvam AI’s model is expected to launch, with two to three more startups joining the initiative. The Union Budget 2025 allocated ₹2,000 crore to the mission, reinforcing India’s resolve to scale its AI ecosystem.
